Rock Bass
Best Baits and Lures for Rock Bass
About Rock Bass in Missouri
The rock bass, a good fish for family fishing fun, is a member of the Sunfish Family. A distinctive characteristic of rock bass is their bulging red eyes. Found in lakes, rivers and streams, Rock bass are one of the less sought after panfish in Missouri. They are great for kids to get started in fishing, and for their size put up a good fight.
Rock bass will bite live bait such as worms, insects and minnows, and smaller versions of more common lures such as crankbaits, jigs and plastic baits. Rock bass enjoy cooler waters, but summer is usually the best time to catch them, especially during the heat of the day when other fish stop biting. You can fish just about anywhere along the shoreline, piers, boat docks, trees, rocks, and weeds that have gravel or rock bottoms. Concentrate on areas that have weeds, rocks, trees or fall-downs and the back of shallow coves. These types of structure seem to attract rock bass. In streams, while fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass are often caught in the same areas. On sunny days try fishing in shaded areas. Don’t be surprised if you catch some bluegill and small bass too. And again, don’t forget to include the family, they’ll love the action as much as you.
